Yeah, the streets feel incredibly safe. Partially because there are so many people nothing much is likely to happen. And partially because the city kinda shuts down after midnite (the subways stop running) so you're never really out late night. I guess it could be because the population is like 98% Japanese and they're just not that intimidating (except for the giant robots and martial arts)... Hey David, good to hear from you.

I too remember the Tokyo / Sapporo club scene back in the late eighties with the pushy Nigerian or West Indies dudes. They must be from central casting since they seem to be the barkers at clubs -- strip and otherwise-- all over Western Europe, or else ballsy enough to be hawking fake Varsace bags across the street from Versace itself . . .
